About Us

Hi. Thanks for dropping by.

I'm Jenny and my husband, Martyn, and I are self-confessed geeks and proud of it!

In fact, we believe that we're all a bit geeky about something... whether it's Science, books, comic books or music, we all have something we are passionate about, something we like to 'geek out' over.
Martyn describes himself as a Science geek primarily who is also interested in comic books, historical novels and sci fi.  I was a band geek when I was younger and although I still am at heart I'm more into reading now. I loves studying literature (am currently studying for an MA in Children's Literature when I'm not working as a teacher) and have recently got into comic books and graphic novels too.  This new awareness of comics probably explains my new fascination with She-Hulk!

When we first moved in together our house was mainly furnished with items bought cheaply from BHS, IKEA or Matalan... or items donated by either our parents, grandparents or Martyn's brother.  After moving from the rented flat into our own house we realised that we needed to make the place more our own.  We started to collect items which said more about us, both individually and as a couple.  We started to collect items which reflected our interests (such as our Quentin Blake prints of illustrations from the BFG and Matilda, our framed copy of 'A Lovely Love Story' by Edward Monkton- which was also a reading at our wedding, or our LEGO mini figure storage heads).  After a while we also began to fuse our geeky interests with crafting to make some interesting items to decorate our house with.

Following Martyn's decision to leave teaching he decided to turn his hobby into a cottage industry-style business creating geeky gift items (jewellery, homewares etc) out of pre-loved items (text books, comics, small toys and figures).  He's still developing the GeekCycled brand but has begun to sell on the internet (etsy) and at craft fairs.

Me, I'm maintaining my amateur status in the world of craft (in case I ever want to craft for the Olympics!?!).  I like making things for the house and pottering about using different styles and techniques.  Occasionally something I make finds its way onto the etsy store or onto the craft stall table but more than likely you'll find me jumping from one craft to another as my interest changes.  Like Martyn, I do like upcycling and recycling so many of my crafty endeavours involve this.  I also love shopping from handcrafted and vintage items and am an advocate of buying from artists, craftspeople and small businesses.  I'm trying to be as eco and money conscious as I can be so crafting and thrifting helps with this too!

This blog has a few different purposes...
To catalogue our geeky interests and share them with the online world (or whoever is reading)
To share our geeky and vintage finds
To share my crafty (+ eco/thrifty) exploits
(Being really honest here...) To promote Martyn's business GeekCycled and share his items with the online world (or whoever is reading).
